Managing Director for Retraining of Racehorses (RoR)

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: Competitive

Location: Hybrid role with offices based in Lambourn (RG17 7HD), required to travel extensively.

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), is a hugely successful charity that promotes the versatility and adaptability of racehorses for other equestrian activities following their retirement from racing. It also protects horse welfare through a nationwide ‘safety net’, that is available to assist any former racehorses in need of charitable support, by providing funding to bring them back to health and re-home them.

Following on from the publication by the Horse Welfare Board (HWB) of the After Care Funding Review the Trustees of RoR have agreed with the HWB and the wider industry that RoR should be the body responsible for implementing its recommendations and achieving its objectives, in addition to RoR’s existing role in promoting alternative careers for former racehorses in which it has been so successful, which will continue as before.

Accordingly, they are looking to recruit a Managing Director to enable it to meet the additional strategic objectives set out in that report, who will report to the Board of Trustees. The Managing Director will be both a compelling advocate for the organisation’s vision and mission externally and an effective manager and builder of teams internally, working closely with the Horse Welfare Board and British Horseracing as key service providers.

The role will develop strategic plans and objectives, as agreed by the Board, and lead on the successful execution of the RoR strategy. It will have overall responsibility for the operational and financial stability of the organisation, including negotiating and securing funding alongside developing and expanding RoR’s funding relationships.

The role will be a spokesperson for RoR, ensuring that the organisation’s mission and vision are communicated both internally and with external partners and networks. The role will also lead on developing a high performance and engaged culture within RoR where employees are motivated and feel supported.

We are looking for a proven leader with exceptional operational management skills of people, systems, process, quality and finances. You will have a track record of strategically structuring and/or monitoring the operations to deliver high impact and sustainable results. You will have knowledge of the equestrian environment particularly thoroughbreds and have an understanding of the likely welfare issues for former racehorses in need of charitable support.

To be successful in this role you will be a strategic, self-motivated, methodical and rigorous professional who has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven experience of managing complex partnership relationships and networks in a multi-country, cross-cultural environment. You will also have a track record of overseeing successful fundraising and will be experienced in controlling budgets.
