About us…

Arena Racing Company does so much more than lead the UK’s largest horse racing group. We have 21 racing venues showcasing horse racing, greyhound racing, golf courses, hotels and events. In short, leisure, entertainment, media production and distribution are at the heart of what we do, making it an exciting and diverse place to work!

Our success is a team effort which is why we offer great opportunities for growth, development and career progression. After all, it’s our employees that enable us to offer first class service and create an electric atmosphere, all within an industry we love.

About The Role:

The new Legal Counsel will report to, and work alongside, ARC’s General Counsel, assisting across a diverse and wide-ranging portfolio of work. You will be involved in preparing a wide variety of commercial and media contracts, assisting with matters of compliance, and contract management. This role will also include some administrative support to the General Counsel.

We are looking for a qualified junior lawyer, NQ-2 years of PQE (although this is only a guide, and significant weight will be given to the factors below), working in a highly successful and recognised commercial, media and/or technology team either in private practice or in-house.

The Legal Counsel’s main focus will be the licensing of data and audio-visual content to bookmakers, so experience of media rights licensing will be a significant benefit. Whilst a relatively junior position, the Legal Counsel will be required to work with a good level of autonomy, albeit with the support of the General Counsel, and be able to advise the business on a wide range of matters. Experience of managing legal projects, and directly advising stakeholders on relevant matters will be important.

To be set up for success, the Legal Counsel will need:

  • a well-rounded personality with the capacity to create, develop and maintain strong relationships and work effectively with others from a wide range of professional and non-professional disciplines;
  • excellent technical legal skills (relative to PQE), especially an ability to draft clearly & concisely;
  • highly commercial and constructive problem-solving abilities and are able to work with a good degree of autonomy, taking the initiative and proactively managing tasks;
  • a willingness to operate out of your comfort zone and play a proactive role in developing ARC’s legal function.

This is a great opportunity for an ambitious, motivated individual who is seeking to join a broad, business-facing legal role. Our Legal Counsel will be involved in:

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts (media rights, distribution, licensing, technical arrangements etc.);
  • Legal management and servicing a range of retail and online bookmaker relationships in the UK and overseas;
  • Providing legal support for business stakeholders on a range of matters (e.g. real estate, NDAs, sponsorship, services acquisition and provision);
  • Supporting the racecourses and greyhound tracks with their various contracting requirements (e.g. events, sponsorship, venue hire, brand and marketing partnerships, licensing, residential & commercial property matters, technology and more);
  • Assisting on any legal matters affecting the ARC group or any subsidiary company as well as working with and managing external legal counsel as required.
