The Hong Kong Jockey Club is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Head of Veterinary Clinical Services.

The position will suit an experienced equine veterinarian with a strong background in people management, a track record of high standards of professional performance and integrity, excellent communication and team building skills and a commitment to the success of the sport of horseracing.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Services (DVCS)

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has a global reputation as a professional and highly successful horse racing organization that maintains very high levels of both customer service and racing integrity.
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Services (DVCS) provides a full range of professional veterinary services to the standards of an international centre-of-excellence in racetrack and equestrian practice within a larger corporate environment.

The racetrack section of the DVCS provides services to over 1400 Thoroughbred racehorses at the Club’s Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong and Conghua Racecourse and Training Centre (CRC) located in the Greater Bay Area of Southern China. A separate Equestrian Section provides services for a further 600 retired Thoroughbreds and other horses at nine riding establishments throughout Hong Kong and the New Territories.

The Attributes of the Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate should possess most, if not all, of the following qualifications and attributes:

  • A degree in Veterinary Science, eligible for registration with the Veterinary Surgeon’s Board in Hong Kong.
  • Post-graduate training or qualification in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation, equine surgery, equine medicine, diagnostic imaging or another relevant discipline.
  • Significant experience in racetrack veterinary practice and people management.
  • An in-depth knowledge and understanding of horseracing, the challenges it faces, the factors that contribute to the delivery of a high quality racing product, and the role of veterinary services in addressing these challenges.
  • A strong understanding of, and commitment to racing integrity and horse welfare.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the importance and necessity of Veterinary Regulation and Racing Control.
  • A commitment to minimizing the risks of racing and training injury by overseeing the delivery of high quality veterinary services, preventative medicine programs and participating in relevant research projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership, team building, and people management skills.
  • A commitment to and aptitude for developing young veterinarians.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.
  • An effective communicator and public speaker.
  • A demonstrated capability to build a collaborative, supportive and high performance culture that encourages open communication and cooperation among team members.
  • Business unit management skills and experience including strategic planning capability.
  • An ability to work effectively within a corporate environment and within different cultures.

Conditions of Employment

Successful applicants will be offered a mutually agreeable contract period subject to completion of a satisfactory 6 month probation period.
